Trial competitions during both Winter Invitationals and National Championships are wholly different beasts from the Fall Invitationals which our teams have competed in. They allow the uniquely educational experience of mock trial come full circle: Our teams' diligent learning of the federal rules of evidence, courtroom procedure and proper legal debate finally undergoes rigorous testing by top-notch teams and demanding judges. In these sought after environments, competitors and spectators witness firsthand not just the superb execution of legal procedure, but also where this procedure ends and the subjective whims of judges and juries begins. In other words, the overall finesse demanded of real-life litigators comes into full view during these important trials, because not only must the competitors adhere to age-old protocols, but they must also know when to break them. This is what makes law more of an art than a science, and it's what we hope to experience firsthand by attending winter invitationals.
